The rebellion comes when Mr Jones forgets to feed the animals and a fed-up cow pushes her way into the store-shed to look for food. The rest of the animals go in to help themselves and Mr Jones and his men try to get the animals back in line but the animals chase them off the farm - it belongs to them now. The animals rejoice in their victory.
They change the name of the farm to 'Animal Farm' and decide on seven commandments to live by that focus on animal equality and avoiding behaving like Jones. No, Snowball does not die in Animal Farm. Once Napoleon has consolidated his power base, he turns on Snowball, accuses him of betraying the other animals, and exiles him from the farm.

The others said of Squealer that he could turn black into white. Why does Boxer discard his straw hat? The hat was a mark of a human being; animals should not wear clothes. Then, by ensuring that this reality is the only one to which the other animals have access and by establishing an effective death penalty for any animal who questions it, they render their dictatorship indestructible.

After a tour of Jones' house, they decide to leave it untouched as a museum. The death of old Major marks the moment when the animals must begin to put his theory into practice.
For the remainder of the novel, Orwell depicts the ever-widening gulf between the vision expounded by old Major and the animals' attempt to realize it. The names of the pigs chosen to lead the revolution reveal their personalities.
