Once you get your M2 licence, you have up to five years to finish the learning process. After five years, if you do not get your full licence, you will need to start over. If you hold one of these licences, you are still learning to drive and gaining important driving experience before you get a full licence.
You need to wait at least 60 days before you can take your first road test. Your M1 licence is valid for 90 days. If the licence expires, you will need to start over. After you pass the M1 road test, you get an M2 licence. You can now ride at night and on any road. You must still wear a helmet unless you meet the requirements for exemption outlined in Regulation 6 and maintain a zero blood alcohol level.
After 22 months , you can take the second road test. If you are under 18, you must also submit a parental consent form form M , Please note: Alaska law requires a DMV road test or an approved motorcycle class to get a motorcycle license. This means the DMV can not add a motorcycle class for military stationed out of state. Holders of this licence do not receive a notice of expiry in the mail. You will remain a G2 or M2 licence holder until it expires or you pass another road test. You may try the G2 or M2 road test again or take the G1 or M1 road test to requalify for your G2 or M2 before it expires. Your licence will be downgraded to G1 or M1. You may take the G1 or M1 road test to regain your G2 or M2 licence before it expires. If you have passed a road test in the past twelve months before your licence expires it can be counted toward your novice requalification.
Go to the nearest Driver Examination Centre to pay a licensing fee and receive a new licence. For example if you pass the G1 road test to become a G2 driver a month before receiving your expiry notice, you do not need to take the test again.
If the earliest road test you can get is after your licence expiry date the Driver Examination Centre will issue you a Temporary Driver's Licence so you can drive up until the day of your test. The licence will be expired. You may be eligible to book another road test and receive a one day Temporary Driver's Licence for the day of the test, or you may reapply for a G1 or M1 licence by passing the knowledge and vision tests, and paying the licensing fee.
If you take the road test on a Temporary Driver's Licence, be sure to make alternate arrangements for getting home in the event you are unqualified to drive after the test. Usually your licence expiry date is the expiry date of the first novice class licence you obtained.
You must exit from or requalify for each class of licence separately by passing the appropriate road test. The M2 can only be applied after riding for at least 60 days under the restrictions of an M1 licence. Since the Gearing Up-M1 Exit course is provincially certified and involves no street riding, it may be taken at any time while holding an M1 — one does not have to wait until after 60 days.
The paperwork earned upon successful completion of the course, however, must only be submitted after 60 days and before 90 days for the upgrade to be applied.
Other than maintaining a blood alcohol level of zero, the remaining M1 restrictions are lifted. The M2 licence expires after 5 years, with the expectation that riders are prepared for full motorcycle licensing privileges after that time. Riders who let the M2 lapse will be required to begin the process again, including wait times.
