Why does my cocker spaniel howl

From grooming to birthing puppies it seems my dreams have come true working with cutting blue farm! Throw in some horses and my life is just one big ball of happiness surrounded by animals and my kiddos! As one of her many hobbies she has fostered, re-trained, and rehomed and sometimes adopting herself problematic, behavioral challenged dogs. She specializes in the working breeds, Rottweiler, German Shepard, and Pitbull. Some of her retrained dogs became Law Enforcement canine on search and rescue, and narcotic alert teams.

NaDonna has settled into the Treasure Valley area enjoying her retirement with the love of animals remaining true in her heart. I grew up with dogs, cats, horses, birds, fish, you name it. As an only child, my pets became my first friends. It was in the company of these feathered furry friends that I felt the most comfort. I spent countless hours talking to them and including them in my imaginary adventures.

I would tie capes onto the dogs who were transformed into superheroes and bedazzle the cats with tiaras who became princesses. If it were up to me we would have had the craziest bunch of misfit creatures in the West. One summer as my mom and I were gardening, I heard a faint meow coming from the driveway. I then discovered the newest addition to our family, Tripod. He was a scruffy, stinky, matted three legged kitty desperate to love and be loved.

I thank Tripod for not only the joy he brought to our family, but for the new level of love and appreciation for animals his story gave me. When I was 9 I started showing my dachshund Sydney in 4-H at our local fairs and other venues. Together, we earned countless blue ribbons, grand champion trophies, and memories that would last a lifetime.

I also participated in AKC shows both with my own dogs, and handling for others. I handled a variety of breeds in a variety of classes, but my favorite was handling a King Charles Spaniel named Ozzy.

I loved how sleek and beautiful his gate was and how fluid he moved. Throughout the years I have also volunteered for numerous animal shelters, an exotic animal rescue, and worked on several ranches.

Or relaxing with my chicken, Pete. Spending time in the company of animals has undoubtedly made me a better person and has taught me valuable lessons, unconditional love, loyalty, and the importance of living without judgement. If your spaniel howls when you leave the house or when other family members go out, then perhaps he is howling to try and locate and communicate with you or that family member.

This vocal method of communication and of locating the pack is a basic instinct for many dogs and, with a working bred dog, such as a Cocker or Springer spaniel , the strong connection with working may encourage a strong drive to howl and verbally communicate.

My children are massive dog fans, as is their cousin who breeds gundogs, both spaniels and retrievers. When they were younger their favorite video to play was Dalmations, the tale where Dalmation puppies are stolen by the eveil Cruella Da Ville, who intends to make a coat from the puppies.

In fact, YouTube is filled with videos of dogs showing off their vocal prowess. But why do they do it? In the wild, wolves howl to communicate with one another. They do it to let other pack members knows where they are or to warn off other animals encroaching on their territory. They also do it to assemble the pack and assert a group identity.

In fact, research suggests that canines actually have a sense of pitch. For example, as more wolves join in, each one changes its tone, and recordings have shown that each wolf is howling a different note. Your dog, too, can differentiate pitch and tone. I wondered if a spider had bitten him, so I let him have free run of the laundry room with the crate door open and a bean bag chair. He slept soundly in the bean bag for a few nights until the howling resumed.

It's always around am. Now I wonder if he is responding to a train horn that blows about a mile away or if he hears birds chirping or if he is just lonely. In any case, of the three cockers we have had, he is the first one to ever howl. That said, he is also afraid of literally everything. Best of luck to everybody else who is also dealing with this issue.

Rating Mine does too by: Anonymous My Cocker does that too. Rating My cockers howl by: Berni I have two beautiful cocker spaniels and they are very good boys - contented active and happy. However they do howl during the night - not every night - but two three howls. I think they are dreaming.

We soothe them and they go back to sleep. Rating Soothe the howling of my cocker spaniel by: Marie When my 12 year old cocker spaniel howls at night, I pat her lightly on the back and tell her, all is okay. She goes back to sleep for me and rests well the rest of the night. It's bizarre because there's no trigger that we can identify that prompts her to howl.

My mother lives with me, and when I kiss her goodnight she'll get in between us growling and fervently wagging her tail. It's kinda funny because she doesn't know which one to protect! Mine has never howled and rarely barks. He has the sweetest personality. Tonight the tornado sirens were sounding, but he needed to go outside.

We live in a high rise. I stepped outside just long enough for him to take care of his needs. The sirens were so loud they seemed to be attached to our building. Rocky didn't seem to think anything at all was out of the ordinary. One of my neighbors said that if the air pressure outside did change that he would howl. He has never howled at anything, doesn't usually bark even if other dogs are barking.
