The gate to the park and its popular caverns — down a lonely road through the Mojave National Preserve — has been locked ever since. Much work already is complete. A consultant produced a hydrological footprint of the Providence Mountains and its best aquifer. Then old water pipes were discovered to be leaking in the park. Visitors can visit Providence Mountains early in the morning and explore the other wonderful sites within the Mojave National Preserve including camping under the stars.

The Chemehuevi people, a branch of the Southern Paiute, have lived in the Mojave Desert for thousands of years. If you are planning a trip to Providence Mountains, you will need to take some extra preparation and special precautions to make sure you will be able to have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The quick and easy explanation of how the caverns got here is this: Think million years ago, a warm shallow sea covered the area, and tiny shells and corals piled up to create limestone layers. Between earth movement and wet and dry periods, the caverns were created and drip, drip, drips over those millions of years carrying calcified water created stalactites from above to the stalagmites below.
