He blushes when she asks if he knows Colonel Fitzwilliam. When Darcy arrives, Caroline tries to embarrass Elizabeth by bringing up her connection with Wickham. The plan backfires: the name of Wickham mortifies Georgiana, and only Elizabeth's cool handling of The first contains the shocking news that Lydia had run off with Wickham to get married in Scotland.
The second letter has much worse news: that Colonel Forster Elizabeth blames herself for not revealing Wickham's character to everyone, which would have prevented this. Gardiner wonders if Jane might be right in hoping for the best: Wickham knows Lydia has no money and stands to lose his reputation with his regiment, so Colonel Foster for not watching over Lydia.
She tells Mr. Gardiner to make Lydia and Wickham marry when they are found—and to make Lydia consult her about finding the best deals Longbourn buzzes with the news. It comes out that Wickham accrued serious debts in Meryton as well as gambling debts at Brighton. Gardiner suggests that Elizabeth ask for help from anyone related to Wickham.
More time passes, but all attempts to find Wickham and Lydia fail, and Mr. Bennet returns home. He asks Elizabeth not to talk with Two days later, a letter arrives from Mr. Gardiner: Lydia and Wickham have been found! They are not yet married, but will be, provided that Mr. Bennet says he strongly suspects that Mr. Gardiner has already paid Wickham much more. Wickham would be a fool to take less for Lydia, he says. She expects him to distance himself from her now that Wickham will be joining the Bennet family.
Elizabeth realizes that she and Darcy would have been Gardiner sends a letter saying that Wickham has changed regiments to one in Northern England and that Lydia hopes they can visit Lydia and Wickham arrive at Longbourn. To be fair, how many young men can Lizzy have possibly met at this point in her life? Anyway, it's no wonder that she immediately believes everything he says, like that Darcy is a no-good jerk. It's only after Darcy himself has cleared his own character and pointed out that Wickham isn't quite the angel he seemed that she realizes he's been taken in.
In retrospect, Wickham's manners were actually, well, kind of bad:. She remembered that he had boasted of having no fear of seeing Mr.

She remembered also that, till the Netherfield family had quitted the country, he had told his story to no one but herself; but that after their removal it had been everywhere discussed; that he had then no reserves, no scruples in sinking Mr.

When Wickham finally spoke with Elizabeth at Longbourn, he again tried to steer the conversation to talking about Mr. Darcy in an unfavorable light. However, Elizabeth slyly told him that she was aware about the truth of his past, and that he had lied to her.
Though Wickham tried to press to find out exactly what she knew, she chose to drop the subject, not wanting to argue with Wickham in front of Lydia. Wickham did not speak to Elizabeth again, aware she knew the truth, and departed with Lydia to Newcastle for his new position. When Wickham and Lydia learned that Mr.
Darcy was marrying Elizabeth, Lydia wrote to her sister, probably with encouragement from Wickham, asking for an annual stipend to be provided for them. Elizabeth, though, refused to give them any money. Lydia was no better than Wickham with money, and the two kept incurring debts on their various activities of frivolity.
They were never in one place for long, moving around to find cheaper accommodations. Whenever they did move, Elizabeth or Jane, who married Mr. Bingley, would pay off the debts they left behind. Wickham was not allowed at Pemberley, but Darcy would help him in his career, for Elizabeth's sake. Wickham is a very charming man, an excellent conversationalist and possesses a gift for making friends. Unfortunately, he is also an immoral, extravagant liar who has no problem with using or ruining other people in order accomplish his own ends.
He tends to live in the moment without giving much thought to the future and has by so doing thrown away many of the advantages that he was given due to old Mr.
Darcy's patronage. Until his marriage to Lydia, his overall plan in life was to marry an heiress. He is not happy with his marriage. Lydia is Wickham's wife through an "arranged marriage" set by Darcy.
