Blackmon says in , the band underwent significant change and he trimmed the roster. At the time, Johnson left the band to do other things. He adds that Nathan and Arnett both ceased performing with the band in and Bright performed with Cameo on and off until The last album Cameo recorded was in but Blackmon says he has maintained a worldwide performing schedule in the years since performing under the Cameo name.
Blackmon says he has learned of his former bandmates performing under Cameo, or The Original Cameo Family, and has had to contact venues in the past. Signed by Casablanca Records to its Chocolate City imprint in , the group soon changed its name to Cameo after concerns that New York City Players might cause confusion between them and the funk band Ohio Players. They released one self-titled album in on the independent label Encounter.
Cameo started with a deep, funk sound, but it was obvious from the start their sights were set on the dance floor. Their first album was Cardiac Arrest which featured its first hit single, "Rigor Mortis. The height of Cameo's career was in the s, particularly Word Up! By the time Cameosis came out in , Cameo had gained considerable momentum through singles such as "Shake Your Pants". Albums such as 's Knights of the Sound Table and 's Alligator Woman saw the band playing up their eclectic style.
The song "Word Up! It also saw the absence of Nathan Leftenant, but the return of guitarist Charlie Singleton as one of the "main" members.
Blackmon grew up in Harlem in a neighborhood that included the legendary Apollo Theater. In his teens, he started playing drums in a band. Cecil Holmes flew to New York to listen to material from the band and chose to issue their track, "Rigor Mortis" as a single. In the meantime, Blackmon was taking classes at Julliard School Of Music and had a part-time job as a salesman at a clothing store.
In , Blackmon pared down the at one-time member Cameo to himself, Tomi Jenkins and Nathan Leftenant , using guest musicians in concert and on record.
